BY WAY OF INTRODUCTION

This website is for people like me who love Salinger's Catcher in the Rye (CR), and who might also find some of the things offered here interesting or striking or whatever. It's almost impossible to say in a few words why I like this book so much; therefore, to put it in a nutshell, I'll explain it like this:
I have a very poor memory, but if a time came in which - like in Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 - some people started memorizing works of literature because other people had started burning them, I would most willingly volunteer to learn The Catcher in the Rye by heart.

June 1, 2006: NOTE: I just saw the Making of Fahrenheit 451, and I was touched by what a critic said; she pointed out that the English expression "learn by heart" (a dead metaphor) actually implies something like love for the thing you learn - in this case, the book...

There they are - the ducks!

The little lake near Central Park South where Holden Caulfield went to look for the ducks. In fact, the ducks are there in the background, but I'll have to admit it - you can hardly see them.

BASIC STRUCTURE OF THIS WEBSITE

A. THIS INTRODUCTORY or HOME PAGE

B. INTERNAL ASPECTS

This includes material basically concerning aspects of the novel itself - what scholars might call internal or intrinsic approach/criticism. Since everybody knows that Mr Salinger is not exactly keen on having people quote from CR, this section suffers from a certain handicap - there are so many things I would like to quote...
C. EXTERNAL ASPECTS

This comprises material from outside the novel itself - what might be called external or extrinsic approach/criticism. It may include anything from the biographical background of the author to other works of fiction or non-fiction that - in my opinion - somehow relate to CR.
D. LINKS & THINGS

This includes interesting links on the web, but also - after all, there is a world outside the internet, for Chrissake! - reference to secondary literary works, etc.

You prefer a visual approach?
Okay - take a look at the GALLERY first
