Elliott Smith

"PICTURES OF ME"

lyrics and chords of an amazing song

from the album Either/Or (1997)

***

The (often) outrageous chord changes of this fantastic song are often "completely wrong" on various internet sites - which is why I have tried to show what I feel to be the correct chords, plus a few personal notes.

***

D                                E7
1. Start stop and start  Stupid acting smart

Bb                              G                                         [A G# G]
Flirting with the flicks  You say it's just for kicks
the mini bass line (3 notes in brackets) actually makes you feel that there is a chord change; however, Elliot stays on G!
G!!                                      A           Bb
You'll be the victim of your own dirty tricks

F                             E7               Bb
You got yourself to tease and displease

2. Doors swinging wide   You walked in to hide
Looking at your feet   Failure's complete
Saw you and me on the coin-op TV That's Smith too - in this line the drums suddenly sort of casually drop in - very laid back
Frozen in fear every time we appear

CHORUS

C                                                C/B               Bb
I'm not surprised at all and really, why should I be?

G                           Dm
See nothing wrong  See nothing wrong

C                                              C/B           Bb
I'm so sick and tired of all these pictures of me

G                            A!!
Completely wrong   Totally wrong
A major:  that's kind of surprising here - and often totally wrong on the internet ...

... then again, it's logical because it leads back to D major
3. You go walking by   Here come another guy
Jailer who sells   Personal hells
Who'd like to see me down on my fucking knees
Everybody's dying just to get the disease lyrics: this is certainly one hell of a paradoxical statement

SOLO:  D  E7  Bb  G          G      A   Bb       F   E7   Bb Note that the lead guitar just stays on D in the first part of the solo - very simple yet very effective because of the tension between this minimalist "melody" and the chords

I'm not surprised at all and really, why should I be?
See nothing wrong  See nothing wrong
I'm so sick and tired of all these pictures of me
Completely wrong  Totally wrong
I'm not surprised at all and really, why should I be?
See nothing wrong  See nothing wrong
I'm so sick and tired of all these pictures of me
Bb                     E7                            Bb
Oh everybody's dying just to get the disease
Everybody's dying just to get the disease
Everybody's dying just to get the disease
Bb to E7 is simply outrageous - except that the note D actually comes up in both chords!
